How do I Know if My Dog is being Treated Well at the Kennel? Published on Saturday, 20 March 2010 If you are like most dog owners, you probably worry about leaving your pet at a boarding kennel whilst you are away. And that is perfectly understandable-you're leaving your beloved pet in the hands of strangers, after all. It's for your pet and for your peace of mind that you should establish whether your dog is being treated well at the boarding kennel. PAY A VISIT TO THE KENNEL BEFORE YOU BOOK A little research beforehand goes a long way. There is no substitute for a firsthand look at the kennel, so make time to check on it before you finally decide where to book your pet. Check the size and cleanliness of each of the pens or cages, and make sure that your pet will have enough room to move around comfortably whilst in there. A good kennel should also have an area where the handlers can walk and exercise the dogs in their care. This is very important especially if you are planning to leave your pet for more than a few days, as dogs can become very depressed or anxious if they are left in confined spaces for too long. And of course, check the condition of the animals already there. They should be clean, well-fed, and are not displaying any signs of anxiety or stress. TALK TO THE STAFF Ask to talk to the handlers or the staff members directly in charge of caring for the dogs, and not just to the receptionist who is in charge of taking your reservation. Don't be shy about asking after their credentials or training, and probe gently to see how they discipline the animals in their care. Make it clear that you are serious about the care of your pet. ASK AROUND Ask other pet owners in the area or go to online pet care forums to ask for recommendations and anecdotes of their experiences with their boarding kennels. You may be surprised at what you find: some large and well-known kennels may actually yield more bad experiences than you think, whilst a small, relatively unknown kennel may be a gem.
